Te Mata Peak at dawn, Hawke's Bay

Hawke’s Bay Wine Tours

Four hosted days through New Zealand’s oldest wine region, in an electric-first fleet with a local host. Priced per person, in New Zealand dollars, GST included.

Hawke’s Bay is a Great Wine Capital, one of twelve in the world and the only one in New Zealand. Our tours are private and hosted, which means the vehicle is yours for the day, the itinerary bends to what interests you, and the person driving knows the winemakers by name. Every departure collects you from your accommodation anywhere in Napier, Hastings, Havelock North or Cape Kidnappers, and returns you there.

Guests at the Atea a Rangi Celestial Compass, Waitangi Regional Park

Great Wine Capital Discovery

4 hours

A four hour introduction to Hawke's Bay that blends world-class viticulture, ancient Maori navigation and the landscape that shaped both. We collect you from your accommodation and travel out to the coast at Atea a Rangi, where the Celestial Compass tells the story of how traditional navigators read the stars, the sun and the moon to cross the Pacific.

From the coast we turn inland to Te Mata Estate, New Zealand's oldest family-owned winery, for a signature Discovery Tasting among the vineyards that built the region's reputation. We finish at the summit of Te Mata Peak, 399 metres up, with 360 degree views over the Tukituki Valley and the Pacific.

Te Mata Estate, Hawke's Bay

Great Wine Capital Signature

5 hours

Five hours across three internationally acclaimed wineries, with a guided tasting at each and a platter lunch taken where the wine is grown. The suggested route runs Craggy Range, then Te Mata Estate with an additional Coleraine tasting, then the Smith & Sheth Experience Heretaunga in the Oenotheque at the Village Exchange.

Hawke's Bay wineries sit ten to twenty minutes apart. That is the quiet advantage of this region: five hours here covers ground that would take eight anywhere else.

  • Guided tastings at three wineries

  • Commentary on the region's varietals and winemaking
  • Private vehicle and host for the duration
  • Pickup and return to your accommodation

Guests on a Hawke's Bay wine tour

Great Wine Capital Reserve

8 hours

Eight hours is what Hawke's Bay deserves. The Signature shows you three great estates. The Reserve gives you time to understand each one. Cellar door tastings become library tastings. A conversation with a winemaker becomes a walk through the barrel hall.

At the centre of the day sits a set menu lunch at Craggy Range, taken in the shadow of the Te Mata Peak escarpment in one of the most beautiful winery settings in New Zealand. Three hours are set aside for it, and the pace of the day is built to make that unhurried rather than rushed. Te Mata Peak, the Tukituki Valley, the Art Deco streets of Napier and the coast at Te Awanga are all within reach, and there is time for them.

  • Craggy Range, Te Mata Estate and Smith & Sheth
  • Set menu lunch at Craggy Range Winery, booked on your behalf

At Bay Blueberries, again owner-hosted, there is real fruit ice cream and seasonal fruit tasting.

The rest of the day flexes with the season. Additional producers are advised at the time of booking, and Sunday departures include the Hawke's Bay Farmers Market. Every guest goes home with a curated selection from the day's producers.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a wine tour in Hawke's Bay cost?

Our hosted tours are priced per person in New Zealand dollars, GST included, and the per-person rate falls as the group grows. The four hour Great Wine Capital Discovery runs from $225 per person for a party of seven up to $540 per person for two. The five hour Signature runs from $445 to $795. The eight hour Reserve runs from $730 to $1,210. The eight hour Artisan Producers Full Day runs from $720 to $1,200.

How long is a Hawke's Bay wine tour?

Four hours for the Great Wine Capital Discovery, five hours for the Signature, and eight hours for both the Reserve and the Artisan Producers Full Day. Each begins and ends at your own accommodation.

Which wineries do you visit?

The Signature and the Reserve visit Craggy Range, Te Mata Estate and Smith & Sheth. The Discovery includes a Discovery Tasting at Te Mata Estate. Hawke's Bay wineries sit ten to twenty minutes apart, which is why a five hour day here covers three estates comfortably.

Is lunch included?

Yes on three of the four tours. The Signature includes a platter lunch. The Reserve includes a set menu lunch at Craggy Range Winery. The Artisan Producers Full Day includes an owner-hosted platter lunch at Te Mata Figs. The four hour Discovery does not include lunch. Beverages and wine pairing with lunch are not included on any tour.

Do you pick up from my hotel?

Yes. Every tour collects you from and returns you to your accommodation anywhere in Napier, Hastings, Havelock North or Cape Kidnappers, at no extra charge.

How many people can come on a tour?

Minimum two guests. Our per-person pricing is published for parties of two through seven. Groups of eight or more, and multi-vehicle programmes, are arranged by quotation.

Can children join a wine tour?

Yes. Infants aged 0 to 4 travel free of charge, and children aged 5 to 12 receive 50 percent off the per-person touring rate. Tell us their ages when you book so the correct child restraints are fitted.

Do you run tours on cruise ship days in Napier?

Yes. We run private shore excursions timed to your ship's all-aboard time, stated in New Zealand time. One thing changes: the Arataki Honey private tasting on the Artisan Producers Full Day is not available on Napier cruise ship days, and alternative producers are substituted.

How far in advance should I book?

For December and January, as early as you can, because those dates book out months ahead and our vehicle numbers are limited. For the rest of the year, two to four weeks is usually comfortable. If your dates are close, ask anyway.
